Snow Days with Mom

Snow Days with Mom

Snow days were the best days!

What a gift to roll out of bed as a child, dreading the usual school day routine, and then spot snow flurries outside the window. Slow, lazy strides quickly turned into rushed sliding down stairs on backsides, as we rushed to find Mom - anxious to see if the weather might just free the day for play.

My mother loved snow days just as much as we did. She would make hot cocoa, wrap us in cozy knitted blankets, and set us up by the window to watch the snow fall and listen intently as the radio announcer read school cancellations in alphabetical order, each name heightening the anticipation. The suspense was almost too much to bear until we finally heard our school’s name and we would hoot and holler because just like that, the day opened up before us.

As soon as we could pull on boots and jackets, we were out in the yard making snow angels while the first soft layer of snow was still a flawless blanket of white. Then, once the roads were plowed and calls were made to family and friends who might want to join in the fun, we grabbed our sleds and headed out to one of our favorite sledding hills, Wilcox Park.

We were bundled head to toe, wrapped in so many layers that movement felt clumsy, but way too excited to care. The moment the car stopped, we were off, sleds in hand, boots crunching through the snow, laughter spilling out ahead of us. That first run was always the most exhilarating - the speed forgotten since last winter, every ride setting a new personal record.

We sledded down that same hill again and again, never bored for a moment. I remember how warm it felt beneath all those layers as I trudged back up the hill for the umpteenth time, and how gloriously cold and crisp the air felt against my cheeks as I flew back down. I swear, even the hot cocoa tasted better when sipped from a thermos at the top of a sledding hill. And when it was finally time to head home to warm our bones by the fire - boots soaked, toes numb, cheeks rosy - we were all smiling ear to ear because snow days with Mom were the best kind of days.
